About Darrow
Darrow is a start-up company that has developed a legal intelligence platform that scans multiple online information sources to detect potential legal violations. The platform analyzes publicly available data, such as web traffic, social media communications, and other open databases, using advanced AI models and natural language processing (NLP). The data is compared to other legal rulings and regulations, allowing the identification of anomalies that suggest potential legal violations. By mapping and cross-referencing information from various sources, the company assesses the severity of the violations and their possible financial value for plaintiffs. The system enhances the efficiency of identifying and developing potential cases for law firms, thereby increasing their revenue.
A Win-Win for Law Firms and the Public
For law firms, the result is a reduction in “unbillable hours” through the systematic detection of opportunities to handle cases that are likely to succeed in court. For the public, the outcome is the optimal enforcement of civil rights and a significant reduction in the judicial system’s response time to wrongdoings by large corporations. The company currently employs 130 people, 55% of whom are women. Since its founding, Darrow has raised $59 million, with prominent investors including Georgian, NFX, Entrée Capital, F2 Capital, and YCombinator.
The U.S. Class Action Market: $63 Billion in Annual Revenue
Darrow operates in the U.S. class action market, where annual revenues reach $63 billion. The company works with hundreds of litigators from 60 of the top law firms across the U.S. Since its inception, it has uncovered hundreds of significant legal violations that have resulted in litigation worth over $10 billion. Darrow is effectively in a “blue ocean.” While there are hundreds of legal-tech companies helping law firms streamline processes (e.g., through automated due diligence, contract generators, etc.), Darrow helps them grow and expand their business. Currently, no other company monitors the internet to find legal violations and delivers them to the right attorney. Furthermore, the market in which Darrow operates has not yet reached its full potential, as many legal violations never make it to court and are essentially forgotten. With AI and language models, Darrow identifies legal violations and expands the market.
Helping Uncover Wrongs Across Various Sectors
In one case, the platform helped expose a polluting factory discharging toxic chemicals into a river, causing severe environmental and health damage to the residents of the nearby town. In another instance, a law firm discovered that a large hospital had transferred sensitive medical data of hundreds of thousands of patients to an advertising company without the patient’s consent, to enable targeted advertising. In another case, it was revealed that a large U.S. company systematically discriminated against female employees by paying them significantly lower wages than their male counterparts in the same roles.
The Founding Entrepreneurs
Evyatar (Evya) Ben Artzi- Founder, Partner and CEO. Before founding Darrow, Ben Artzi interned at the Supreme Court in the office of Justice Uzi Vogelman. He holds a bachelor’s degree in law and Cognitive Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is one of the founders of the Yahav Association, which promotes learning groups inspired by the Zionist movement. Ben Artzi is also a captain in the reserves.
Gila Hayat- Founder, Partner and CTO. Hayat is a graduate of Mamram and founded the company immediately after completing her mandatory service as an officer in Unit 8200, where she was recognized for excellence in various software roles. During her service, Hayat worked on several projects, aiming to solve security issues with the help of AI. Hayat was selected for Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list and was recently named CTO of the Year for 2023 by the Mamram Alumni Association.
The Company’s Vision
A fair and efficient judicial system is a prerequisite for a functioning society. To protect civil rights and enforce the rule of law, skilled professionals committed to justice—judges, lawyers, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers—are required. In the technological era, AI tools can assist the system by gathering data, analyzing documents, and predicting outcomes, but judicial and moral decisions must remain in human hands. Combining human legal professionals and advanced technology will enable a fairer and more efficient judicial system for the benefit of society as a whole. Darrow seeks to lead this integration, with the giant U.S. market as the cornerstone for advancing human rights protection worldwide.
