Dr. Michael Abba

Dr. Michael Abba is a maxillofacial surgeon specializing in salivary glands endoscopy. He serves as a senior physician in the Hadassah Ein Kerem and is a founding partner of the MRPL Experts Center – a unique maxillofacial surgery center with a general anesthesiology permit.
Over the course of 20 years of practice, he accumulated vast experience in complex cases involving advanced bone loss and dento-alveolar surgery – implants, sinus lifts, complex extractions of wisdom teeth and more. Dr. Abba is part of a small team of salivary endoscopy specialists in the Haddasah Ein Kerem Medical Center and one of the few dentists in Israel who specialize in this unique and fascinating field. He is also an innovator and an entrepreneur, who founded a remote-surgery startup and consults hi-tech companies.

Academic Background and Professional Training

Dr. Abba is a graduate of Tel Aviv University (2004) and has an M.B.A. from Reichmann University with a specialization in Medical Innovation and Technological Innovation. He started his professional career as an intern in maxillofacial surgery in the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon and in his 20 years of practice he accumulated vast experience and had the privilege of specializing in salivary gland surgery alongside one of the top surgeons in the world and the field’s founder – Prof. Oded Nachlieli. He underwent a fellowship (as a guest dentist) in the maxillofacial department of LMU, Munich, Germany and an advanced seminar in salivary glands in Mount Sinai Hospital, NY.
Dr. Michael Abba is very active in research and published articles in professional journals in Israel and internationally. He authored a chapter about minimally-invasive approaches for treating eye socket trauma. He lectures and mentors and is an active participant in professional conferences in Israel and globally. He won the first prize for an innovation lecture in an international maxillofacial surgery conference in Hong-Kong, and the Excellent Lecturer award of the Dentistry Faculty of Hadassah Ein Kerem.

Clinical Work

In the framework of his public healthcare activity, he serves as a senior physician and surgeon in the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, under Prof. Nerdi Caspi. In this framework, he performs salivary glands surgeries, a unique procedure that treats salivary gland stones, tumors and various pathologies of the area. In the private sector, he works in the MRPL Experts Centers (a maxillofacial clinic) – a dedicated professional surgery center in this field. The center serves as a national hub for maxillofacial surgeries, is licensed to perform full anesthesiology by the Ministry of Health, and offers operating rooms for rent. The center’s primary strength lies in its multidisciplinary team of experts who collaborate, enabling ideal treatment for complex cases and optimal decision-making, with cutting-edge equipment. The center offers a comprehensive range of procedures, including – complex wisdom tooth extraction, treatment of advanced bone loss through advanced technologies such as computer-guided planning, zygomatic implants, dental implants, bone grafting, sinus lifts, and of course, salivary glands diseases. The center also treats cases of odontophobia, providing a supportive environment for patients who suffer from fear and anxiety of dental procedures. The center has agreements with various insurance companies.

Volunteer Work

Dr. Abba shares his experience globally and for 9 years he participated in medical work in Africa, where he helped establish a local maxillofacial network which remains active today.
As part of these operations, he supported the local teams remotely during surgical procedures through innovative remote medicine technologies, and this turned out to be extremely essential during the COVID period. By providing real-time guidance, he has enabled local dentists to perform complex operations. One prominent case involved a six-year-old child who had been unable to eat for 4 years due to a fusion of his lower jaw to the skull, which prevented him from opening his mouth – an action he was able to perform after the surgery.

Another extraordinary case involved a Ugandan Presidential Guard soldier who suffered a severe facial injury from a grenade explosion. Other procedures included surgeries of children with severe birth defects, trauma cases, tumors and more. Outside his clinical work, he channels his passion for racing into philanthropy, participating in racing events to fundraise for “Bigger Than Life”, an association for children with cancer.
