About Prof. Nidal Muhanna

Prof. Nidal Muhanna MD, PhD is the Chairman of the division of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery And Maxillofacial Surgery in the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

Also, he is the Head of Research Authority and Director of The Interdisciplinary Center for Head & Neck Surgical Oncology in the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

Prof. Muhanna is considered as an Israeli and an international authority in the following fields: thyroid surgeries, parathyroid surgeries using a minimally invasive approach, salivary gland surgery, removal of tumors of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx, neck surgeries and cervical dissection, treatments for skin tumors in the head and neck area, resection of tumors in the nasal cavity and sinuses and maxillary, surgeries of the swallowing and speech chamber, radiofrequency therapy for thyroid nodules as well as diagnosing lesions using a needle biopsy with ultrasound guidance.

During his extensive career he won six national awards and also six Peer-Reviewed Grants. Along the years Prof. Muhanna published about 75 professional publications, appeared over 80 times in scientific conventions and even wrote and edited about 6 chapters in professional books. In addition, he serves as a member in a number of national and international professional companies and as a surveyor on behalf of a number of clinical newspapers and newspapers that deal in basic sciences.

Internship at one of the World’s Leading Centers in Head and Neck Surgery

While still studying medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Prof. Muhanna combined the academic-research field with the clinical field. He did his risedency in Otolaryngolgy head and neck surgery at Shaare Zedek medical center in Jerusalem , and did his fellowship training for four years in Princess Margaret Cancer Center in Toronto, Canada, which is considered as one of the leading centers in the world in the field of head neck, skull base and reconstructive surgery.
In effect, to this day he is a member of the faculty of Toronto University and the research center that is affiliated with Princess Margaret Cancer Center hospital, and serves as a science member in the department of ENT and head and throat surgery in this university.

Close to a Decade of Management Roles in Ichilov Medical Center

In 2016 Prof. Muhanna returned to Israel and was appointed as director of the unit of head and neck surgery in Ichilov Medical Center. Four years later, in 2020, he was appointed the director of the entire department, a role he serves in to this day. Over the years Prof. Muhanna performed thousands of surgical procedures and surgeries in the field of head and neck tumors and he has extensive experience in diverse fields of head and neck surgery including tumor resection surgery, reconstruction with microsurgery and free suspension, robotic surgery and open and endoscopic skull base surgeries.

Establishment of a Head and Neck Cancer Research Laboratory

At the same time, Prof. Muhanna established the Head and Neck Cancer Research Laboratory in Ichilov, where he instructs a large number of students from Tel Aviv University. The laboratory collaborates with leading medical centers around the world, as well as the University of Toronto.

Among the other fields the lab engages in, the following can be counted: molecular, immunological, biological and genetical aspects research, and new treatments to the cancer disease; research of the interactions between immune cells and tumor cells; an integration of modern technologies, molecular, imaging and photonic imaging for early detection of cancer; identifying cancer-causing viruses; developing new treatments (as part of an international research) for cancer; intraoperative imaging using nanoparticles and nanotechnology; research in the field of thyroid gland, including biomarkers and blood tumor cells, and more.
