About theator
Theator is a groundbreaking Israeli med-tech startup that leverages video analysis of surgical procedures to enhance medical care and streamline performance. The company uses AI to identify surgical stages and events and offer insights for better quality, safety and clinical effectiveness. Beyond improving clinical outcomes, the platform’s ability to reduce complications and enhance workflow helps hospitals save time and resources. Theator is currently active in leading hospitals in Israel, the U.S. and Canada, with the potential to transform the quality and standardization of surgical medicine worldwide.
AI at the Heart of The OR
Theator was founded in 2018 by Dr. Tamir Wolf, CEO, and Dotan Asselmann, CTO. Its mission is to help hospitals and surgeons across the globe handle variance and gaps in surgical methods to improve the quality and efficiency of surgery.
Theator’s system uses computer vision to automatically capture, analyze and structure data from surgical videos of hundreds of different types of laparoscopic and robotics procedures, transforming video into a reliable, accurate and accessible source of clinical knowledge – for the first time.
Recording, Learning and Improving the Quality of Surgical Procedures
Theator’s solution is divided into 4 main components:
Module 1: Automatic Recording and Analysis of Surgery Video in the Hospital
The system enables automated and safe cloud-based recording, documentation and storage of video, without manual intervention. Each surgical case is documented continuously, and the information is recorded in real-time, in full compliance with the strictest standards of privacy and information security.
During recording, the system conducts an AI-based analysis of the videos, automatically identifying stages, actions and execution patterns during the surgery. This analysis enables the extraction of accurate surgical insights, identification of trends and deviations, and ongoing learning for improving quality, safety and efficiency.
Module 2: An AI-Based Surgical Content Management System
The system provides secured access to the surgical content anytime, anywhere. It enables live views of procedures, video editing and snapshot capture, allowing users to create personalized video libraries for learning, sharing and knowledge management.
Module 3: Professional Learning and Training Support
The system enables video sharing, colleague tagging and professional discussions about the course of surgery for performance improvement, professional development and advanced training.
Directors of residency programs can monitor the personal progress of each resident, build customized learning programs and establish a continuous and measurable learning process.
Module 4: Management Tools for Improving Care Quality and Operational Efficiency
The system offers ongoing monitoring of OR team performance, identification of best practices and anomaly alerts. AI-based analysis compares the performance of different teams and units using real data, identifying opportunities to continuously improve the quality, safety, and consistency of surgical procedures.
Automatic Documentation of Surgery Reports – Surgery-to-Text
One of Theator’s most innovative capabilities is automatic writing of operative reports. Upon procedure completion, the system automatically converts the video and extracted data into a structured and accurate report. It includes a clinical description of the surgical stages, findings and performed actions, and automatically generates accurate medical billing codes in accordance with the progress and complexity of the procedure.
This enables surgeons to focus on their clinical work while the system handles documentation reliably and consistently in a standardized manner. The process improves the accuracy of medical information, reduces errors and saves precious time for the surgical team and the healthcare system.
The Vision – A Smart, AI-Based OR
Theator’s vision is to transform the OR into a smart, AI-powered environment, where every surgical action is continuously documented, analyzed, and studied.
The system unifies surgical video, clinical data and automatic documentation, creating a continuous process of measurement, comparison and learning.
Advanced AI technologies enable Theator to set uniform standards for surgical performance, reduce the variance between surgeons and healthcare institutes and establish a culture of ongoing improvement in quality and safety.
This transforms the OR from a place where knowledge vanishes into a living data source that supports decision-making and drives learning, excellence and medical innovation.
